A Lover's Discourse – Fragments. Dire "Je t'aime" n'est jamais gratuit. ϻFeeling restless and blue, I have recently started reading Roland Barthes' "A lover's Discourse." The first time I ravaged (yes, and this is the only appropriate word to describe my experience) this book was back in college. Barthes calls them "figures" -- gestures of the lover at work. In linking The Immoralist with a fragment from a Lover's Discourse, I chose the piece entitled "The Uncertainty of Signs." In A Lover's Discourse, Roland Barthes compiles a (non-exhaustive) list of "fragments" pertaining to the discourse oflovers. (Fragments of a Lover's Discourse) Roland Barthes. I have a love/hate relationship with this book (borrowed from Maki). Employing her own version of Sortes Virgilianae, the artist picked words out from Roland Barthes's book “A Lover's Discourse: Fragments” and constructed her own signage and direction to lead her from thought to thought. A Lover's Discourse: Fragments. A mandarin fell in love with a courtesan. (Fragments d'un discours amoureux) Roland Barthes.
